New Leatherworking Recipe on 5.4 Test Realm!

I've been watching the patch notes from 5.4 for any sign of tradeskill action and so far the only item mentioned is a new Drum for Leatherworkers. I checked the LW trainer and the Spirit of Harmony vendor the other day and came up empty, so today I went back out to visit faction vendors. I've also been getting help from some of my Twitter followers (thanks peeps!) with ideas for new locations to check. At this point I've exhausted all of the likely faction vendors and found nothing new. I will keep checking them in future patch updates in case the recipe moves there later on.

In the meantime I was following up on a suggestion to check the mob drop possibilities. I went to the Skyrange area of the Valley of the Four Winds to kill random mobs. On my very first Kunzen kill I got a recipe for Hardened Magnificent Hide. The tooltip indicates that it will teach you new recipes, so it sounds exactly like the current "magnificence" recipes:

When I added the new Hide recipe to my book I also learned a second recipe for Gorge Stalker Belt. I'm not sure if this was a glitch, but I'm not going to argue with getting a bonus recipe. If this mechanic remains unchanged then we'll be learning 545 gear recipes from the new Hide recipe:

You can see in the chat window that I learned both of these recipes together. I hope it's not a glitch!

I also went ahead and used the Hardened Magnificent Hide recipe to see if I could learn another new item. As with the previous "magnificence" recipes, this is on a daily cooldown. The recipe I learned today was for a Crafted Malevolent Gladiator's Wyrmhide Helm -- a 476 PVP recipe. You can see from the image that this recipe uses regular magnificent hides:

I will continue to use the daily cooldown for Hardened Magnificent Hide and post the recipes I learn here. And I will watch the Test Realm builds for signs of the Drum recipe. Feel free to post in the Comments if you have questions or suggestions for additional research!

Changes for Build 17161: All Crafted Malevolent gear has been downgraded to Rare quality (was Epic). Hardened Magnificent Hide is on a separate cooldown from other "magnificence" recipes.

  1. Interesting that that Gorge Stalker belt is BoP, so the LW can only make it for herself - that kindof explains the cheap mats.

  2. Gah! I'm glad you caught that because I didn't. That will suck for LW who are not leather/mail wearers.

  3. Great info. Thanks for this! Interested to see how we obtain BS, Eng and Tail CDs.

  4. Yep, I think I'm gonna start sniffing around for those next. I have a hard time believing that LW gets new recipes but Smiths and Tailors don't.

  5. Was it on the same cooldown as the current one?

    1. Sadly the CD is shared in this build. I really don't think that's a good idea though because without the current CD you'd have no mats to keep making the "hardened" recipe. Unless crafters save up all their hides leading up to the patch. From my rough count on Wowhead that's 80+ new recipes or 160 magnificent hide (meaning over 5 months of cooldowns).

    2. You can still use the old recipe for hides, no cd there

    3. True, thanks for pointing that out :) I suspect many LW would consider that an onerous use of materials but in a pinch it's a viable choice.

    4. Eh, depends on realm. On mine, its still usually cheaper to make with 50 that to purchase off the ah

  6. Glad to see you back Kaliope, was beginning to think you'd stopped updating the blog :) Any news on Jewel Danios now the lakes in the valley are dry?

    1. Thanks! Not gone just waiting for something worth writing about :) The PTR is down at the moment but I will see what I can find out when it comes back up.

    2. Just flew through VoEB and Townlong and see no Jewel Danio pools. It seems El has done more research than me on this and found some in a new spot:

      5.4 Jewel Danio

    3. Jewel Danio's are in new Timeless Isle

    1. I can't be certain, as they don't appear to be implemented yet. There is no starter quest from the Shrine NPCs or the Halfhill NPCs. But they may involve the Timeless Isle in some way. I got teleported off of the Isle when I flew over to it so I guess they are still working on the content there.

  8. Ughh, BOP recipes in the middle of an expansion don't really add much value for most of the crafters out there.

Most of us either use professions to make gold, or to help other friends and guildmates.

If history repeats itself, this gear will be replaced almost immediately when the next expansion launches, so is it really worth dumping 20+ hardened hides on this high level gear.

Don't get me wrong, it may help a few people get into LFR with the increased ilvl but I imagine anyone wanting to see the raids has already done it.

    1. Mainly this type of item would give you the ability to gear an alt for LFR or possibly beef them up a bit for the next expansion. I agree that making them BoP gives them fairly low relevance for current content. Now if they were to become BoA then you could produce some nice catch-up gear to spread around to any of your other toons.

    2. ya I guess I've never been into gearing more than one character up for raiding. I am a clear profession altoholic but not for raiding. Once I hit max level and max professions on my alt characters, they are basically there to help other people out and for a few spare gold coins from the AH

Thanks for the data though, glad to see you back. Hopefully we soon learn a bit more about some other professions items for the next patch

  9. As of 7/15, the two discoveries no longer share a cd. So if you go into 5.4 with 90ish hides, and enough leather to do a discovery every day, you will be able to do your hardened hide discovery every day with no delays and no expensive 50 leather conversions.
