Thunder Isle Blacksmithing Quest Update

I'm sad to report that there have been some issues regarding the Blacksmithing quest content on the Thunder Isle. We had a couple of comments yesterday from a reader asking for specifics on the drop rate and faction requirements for quest items. I went out last night to check on my hunter and I couldn't even get into the location where Itoka, the Master of the Forge, is found. There were massive walls near the Beast Pens, making it impossible to get to any of the mobs beyond that part of the island.

I had previously reported on the PTR that you only needed to find him and kill him to get the quest drop once his section of the Isle was unlocked. I also recommended getting your rep up to at least Honored just in case that was part of the requirement. Including myself and a few guildmates I spoke with about this quest, it appears that you may not be able to breeze right out and kill this guy. On the other hand, we've had readers (in the Comments below) indicate they had no trouble doing just that. If you are not able to reach this guy when you first get to Thunder Isle during Stage 4, try completing the new Scenario and running through the daily quest chains.

For me, I could not access Itoka, until I did the scenario for Stage 4 and also ran through the regular daily quests all the way to the Conqueror's Terrace. After turning in those quests, I got two follow-up quests. There may be phasing active on Thunder Isle which would make this area unreachable unless you are on this portion of quest chain. At this point you should be able to find Itoka and take him out. He is a shared mob, so any number of players can participate in the kill and loot the quest item. After he's dead, you will enter the Thunder Forge (door at the north end of his area) and click the book to complete the quest.

You can read my original post here for more details about the fight and the recipes you'll receive from the quest. There is also a map with locations marked for Itoka and the Thunder Forge door.

Blacksmiths should do this quest as soon as possible if you haven't already. The spell to craft a Lightning Steel Ingot is on a one day cooldown, so you'll want to start cranking them as soon as you can. Each time you make the ingot, you'll learn one of the new Crafted Dreadful plate recipes or Haunted Steel 522 epic patterns. Finally, you will learn the upgrade versions of each weapon only when you craft that weapon. Ingots will be required as materials for each version of the weapon. So making ingots is something you'll be doing for a while :)

  1. From what I can tell, doing the scenario to be at stage 4 is the only thing required. Immediately after doing that scenario, I headed up through the mines and found Itoka. I had not accepted any dailies that day.

    1. That's really weird because I did the exact same thing yesterday (scenario completed but no dailies) and I was completely blocked from anything past the Beast Pens. I wonder what the difference was for me. I may run it again on my druid just to see if she has the same trouble.

  2. I was able to walk right up to Itoka without doing any dailies. I do believe I had the PvP dailies for that day in my log though - I completed them on the way back from learning the Blacksmith patterns at the Thunder Forge.

  3. Someone on Stormspire was saying you did not need to do the scenario to get to him. I did the scenario on Monday but since I was VP capped did not turn it in and still was able to get to Itoka.

Blizzard was bizarrely incompetent since it was reported to be a one item per kill (so if melee taged @ 1% and looted first, no item for you.) But that was changed on 27th. As WoWhead said "Itoka's Strange Metal Ingot can now be looted by multiple players--being lootable by only one player while also being a shared tap caused some difficulties this past week." As a quest mob, he is on a minute respawn so no real problem now.

What is strange is that after getting the item on Monday, I also got it again on tue and thur (so before and after the hotfix) It is soulbound and of no use so just a bug that it goes in my bags if I rightclick the boss out of habit. He has been a daily boss kill on a daily both times. Which means with the 27th hot fix, there should be no problem with ungeared alts getting the tiem since it is open-tap. So if you can autodecline the scenario (idk what is true; I did it on a 600 BS who was exalted just to be safe. )

Your daily ingot c/d does not need to be done at the Forge; the weapons do.

A month of cooldowns to get a weapon significantly less powerful than what the not very cool kids are getting in LFR is again frustrating for crafters. (OTOH, my DK with a 463 will take what he can get.)

    GL!

    1. Just took toon, did thunder calls, did not accept any quests, portalsed from boat to island. Rode to Iotoka. But it sure looks like you can get this with no gear once you are 90 if you do it now on a populated server. I.e other people kill it while you tag it. Maybe it won't drop without rep but if you can see/attack him without rep, then my guess is it drops for BS.

Even if forum posts are true about < 90s, the quest now clearly says requires 90 so them getting it wont help.

P.S. My engineer is still pouting

  4. I did the scenario but no dailies and got my quest from him, however I've heard reports (https://twitter.com/Zerohour15/status/316705441310724096) of people walking alts with no scenarios done up to him and looting it.

  5. Sounds like I need to amend my amendment then! I'll reframe this as an alternate option in case anyone has trouble doing the quest "fresh off the boat".

    1. Hi guys,

I have done Itoka (via the daily quest chain) on multiple toons. The strange metal ingot on Itoka only dropped for my BS - honored with Kirin Tor Offensive. She has done the first weapon upgrade, the green (secondary) stats are significantly higher than other weapons of the same level (between 100-200 points difference on a i476 weapon. Hope this helps.
