5.2 Leatherworking Patterns

I'm still seeing very little information on Wowhead about how you acquire the two new "magnificence" recipes, so I decided to just go out and experiment. The only helpful clue available was that these new recipes are a "smart loot" item, which typically means they drop without a lot of effort. So I decided to take a pretty reasonable location and start killing stuff. Areas that are involved in daily quests seemed like a promising spot, so I went with the spiders in the northeast corner of Dread Wastes.

I probably killed about 15 spiders when the pattern for the Magnificence of Scales dropped. It binds when picked up, which I would expect with a smart loot item. It requires a skill level of 500 so it may even be available to Leatherworkers just getting into Pandaria.

There are actually two different recipes, so I picked a new location for part two of my test. This time I went to the Skyrange area in Valley of the Four Winds. This is where many of the Tiller daily quests take place. Once again I started killing quests beasties and this time got the drop on the fifth mob. From this I would assume that the drop rate is pretty generous and that it's very likely a "world drop". We have no hard data to back this up yet, but I suspect you could farm any mob in Pandaria and get these recipes. Just to be conservative, I'll suggest sticking with level 89-90 mobs. I feel fairly confident that Leatherworkers can get these recipes on patch day if they do a bit of farming.

March 5th Update: After the patch yesterday I killed turtles in Valley of the Four Winds and got the recipe from the first pair of mobs I killed. I feel pretty confident that these recipes are a world drop from any Pandaria mob.

Here are pics I took of both recipes:

Both of these recipes allow you to make a magnificent hide at less than half the mats currently used to create one. These recipes are on a daily cooldown that is shared, so you can only use one of these recipes once per day. You can see from the actual recipe tooltip that making these items also gives you a chance at a discovery pattern.

When I made mine I supposedly learned a new pattern but could not locate it in my spellbook. So clearly there are some kinks to work out. I will add more information on the discovery items as I utilize the daily cooldown. Feel free to leave questions about these new items in the Comments!

UDPATE: My 2nd discovery actually shows up in the recipe book -- check it out:

UPDATE #2: My 3rd discovery is yet another item that is not in my recipe book. You can see from the screenshot here that I don't actually have it:

The one entry on Wowhead suggests that it may be an epic recipe. I sure would love to actually see it!

  1. I saw the metagem pattern drop off of trash mobs in the LFR version of ToT. (first wing) I can't link it for you, as I'm not a jc on that toon and I didn't think to screenshot it. It uses various green gems and SoH to make the metagem.

    1. I'll have to check that out, see if I can farm it up with the same types of mobs. Thanks for the tip!

  2. So maybe the 458s are discovery only? Have you seen the 458 PvP patterns yet? /confused did you have any 450 recipes already learned? did they get updated or are they still 450?

Is the MH from 50 EL still in? Not sure if gear will be priced closer to 50 or 20 per hide?

Regardless, isn't this a big cost increase? I.e., the 450 chest took 20 EL and the new stuff you found will take 100 EL or 40 EL plus a c/d?

    1. This first recipe was a 458 recipe, so I'm assuming that the other discoveries will also be 458. Just did a second discovery recipe and got 458 Leather Legs. The old recipes do not appear to be updating, my Contender's recipes are all intact and remain 450.

The old Magnificent Hide recipe is still available, I assume this is a situation where you can make the Hides at the higher cost with no CD, or make the lower cost hides on a 1-day CD.

Yes, the new recipes represent a cost increase for 458 level items. I assume this is probably because the Contender's were designed to be part of the leveling process and these new recipes are not.

    2. TYVM!

So what is your guess? LW get these from hide discoveries, BS from doing the i-am-still-unclear-on lightning forge thing and tailors will probably use their same daily c/d in mothville. (/gumble engineering will be expensive with no commercial value?) Unlike the JC method which cost, it is nice the LW c/d pays - you don't get an imperial silk/SoW/LS but you do essentially get 30 free exotic leather a day. Not great but better than nothing.

  3. re update#2 - any word from the future on haunting spirits, which you would need to craft your invisible quillan boots? d/e like BS? BoE? avail from LFR?

  4. Any hope of leatherworking finally getting a big boy bag?

    1. Nothing yet but I keep doing the daily CD to see what kinds of recipes are unlocked with it. I haven't seen a new LW bag come through the Wowhead data either, but occasionally new items sneak under the radar.

    2. I found a spell but no item to go with it

    3. Ahh, I'm seeing the same with the new 5.2 epic recipes. I've "discovered" two of them already but they do not get added to my recipe book. I'm assuming the actual items have not been implemented yet.

    4. MMO champion now has the data mine for the bag. Yay, only 5 patches after everyone else

    5. Ahh, it must have actually gone in with the most recent build. I will double-check the trainers/vendors for it. It may also be the in the rotation with the new discovery recipes. I also see on Wowhead that the actual item for Quilen Hide Boots (etc) should now be in.

  5. what crafting materials are new pvp patterns needing tho ? is it just hides or is it still scales ?

    1. The new PVP recipes are using 1-2 magnificent hide per item. The new daily CD will let you acquire more hides for less materials, so it's a nice arrangement.

    2. the three pvp I made today were all hides.

  6. i have to get this recipe so i can do this daily?

  10. That's great! It's good to know that leveling alts can pick up some of these recipes.

  11. I have a 85 lock that is a leatherworker. Both patterns dropped for me in Jade Forest one after the other ie two successive kills - I was doing the lorewalker quests near Pearlfin - first time I played her after the patch dropped [she's an alt :)]. Her skill was at 544 - I'm at work now, so I can't check - but I believe I got 2 skill up points per stack converted and a level 458 PvP pattern.

    1. That's good to know, thanks for sharing! I wasn't in a position to check the skill points myself, being at the current cap. But given the fact that it's still yellow @ 600 I assumed it would be a viable skill point generator :)

  12. I had same experience as anonymous, april 22. Lvl 85, in Jade forest, doing pearlfin quests, picked up both recipes. Regarding learning recipes when making magnificent hides, I have made about 20, and keep getting stamina and intellect recipes, when I need stamina and agility. Tried mainly magnificence of leather, but did try magnificence of scales. Looked on forums, but no mention of this problem.

    1. I would guess that the developers don't consider that situation a true problem. They would likely say it's just bad luck. The recipes appear to be totally random from what I've seen with my LW. Just keep doing the magnificence recipe every day and eventually you'll get something you can use :)
