5.2 Blacksmithing: The Thunder Forge Quests

Today I finally made progress on accessing the Thunder Forge. I wish I had a firm grasp of the true progression, but the test realm has been forcibly progressed by the developers and I'm not 100% certain of the player requirements. We were in Stage 5 of the unlocking process until today and I don't know if this quest is available sooner than that. From what I've read in comments on Wowhead, this quest chain was not implemented until this past week or so, which is when Stage 5 was already active. I also have no way of knowing whether there are rep requirements for accessing this quest, but I am currently Honored with the Kirin Tor Offensive.

It may well be that Stage 5 is required, that is when I completed the new scenario for the Thunder Forge. I don't know whether you'd be able to reach the Thunder Forge area until after you finish that quest (done via scenario). For now I would hedge your bets and make sure you do every non-daily quest that Jaina offers you.

It's possible that you could just find Itoka (Master of the Forge, blue dot) outside the Thunder Forge and kill him. He drops the Strange Metal Ingot you need to start the quest. You can find him at the marked location on this map:

After you get his item, you enter the Thunder Forge room (red dot) and there will be a book laying by the forge that you can click to complete the quest. Your reward will be a Lightning Steel Ingot and Notes on Lightning Steel. The note contains seven new recipes: one for making a Lightning Steel Ingot and six plans for "Reborn" weapons. The six plans are Drakefist Hammer, Reborn | Fireguard, Reborn | Lionheart Blade, Reborn | Lunar Crescent, Reborn | Planar Edge, Reborn | Thunder, Reborn. Each of these recipes is still orange at 600 skill, even though they are marked as learnable at 500 skill.

I went ahead and learned the Lightning Steel recipe and made one - as suspected it does indeed have a daily cooldown. This will put a pretty effective throttle on the creation of Lightning Steel and limit how many Reborn weapons show up for sale. That's at least 4 days for a rare weapon and 14 days for epic weapons. If the tooltips are to be believed, you'll need to make each rare weapon in order to learn the epic version. Then you'll need to make the epic version to learn the upgraded epic version of that. This seems to model the original path of progression for these recipes where you were able to upgrade each weapon twice to get a more powerful version.

You also learn new recipes when making lightning steel. Today I learned the recipe for the Haunted Steel Greathelm. Apparently the item for this recipe is not yet implemented. I will post additional recipes as I learn them from the daily cooldown. I also plan to run my Engineer through this quest and report back on that process. Feel free to leave questions in the Comments!

  1. LSI are BoP I assume?

I see your 6 links for the presumably quite expensive 463 weapons. But I am lost as to the next step.

Say on the 11th I kill the boss & get the plans. Then I use my daily c/d to make LS for 4 more days, and then I craft the Lunar Crescent reborn. I am lost on the 14 days for epics and upgrades.

Oh. The plans you link to above to not have the "learn how to" but ptr.wowhead for the item does.

So you have to make the 463 and the other one to get to the epic. Are the others consumed in the process or can you craft them and both get something to sell and an unlock?

Anyway, we all await any further info. Although looking at a calendar, you are not making a PTR epics it seems.

    TY!

    1. Lightning steel is indeed soulbound. You get one when you complete the quest and need 4 more to make the rare weapon. Then you need 10 for the epic weapon. You need another 15 for the upgraded epic weapon. So 4 days for rares, 14 days for epic 1.0, 29 days for epic 2.0 weapons.

I haven't made anything yet, but the mats for the epic weapons include the rare weapon, so I assume they will be consumed by the crafting process. The epic 2.0 weapons also show a ?? item needed to make them which I suspect is the epic 1.0 weapon.

It will be close but I think I can get to the 1.0 epics before the PTR goes down. They are still raid testing after all :)

    1. No worries, I am having to delete dozens of these things per day. Thank you for calling that out, somehow it slipped through the spam filters and my email notifications :)

  6. I guess the posting policy has changed, I hope this works this time. I would like to know if engineering is currently implemented in the thunder forge? I recently got the lightning steel drop on my blacksmith, but I have now killed itoka twice on my engineer with no drop. Both are maxed professions. Is there a rep requirement? The bs was revered, the engineer only honored. I would prefer not to grind rep if not needed. Thanks, I hope.

    1. Engineering should work the same as Blacksmithing, but sadly I was unable to get the plans on my Engineer either. On the PTR my BS was able to loot the plans at Honored with KT. It's my understanding that the drop is not guaranteed but your Engineer should have gotten it after 2 tries. My Smith is Honored, so I'll see if I can confirm the drop with her. Anyone else want to chime in with a confirmation?

As to the Comment posting, I've had to change some of the rules due to spamming. Sorry for the inconvenience :(

    2. Thanks for the reply. I am concerned that engineering is not happening, because I looked through the patch notes again and nothing is said about engineering. I hope there are plans to add it back, but I haven't been able to find a statement about it.

    3. Engineering is not part of the Thunder Forge.

  7. huge disappointment we get a 5.2 patch and as we leave behind all the lfr raids and 483 gear we are honored by blizz with 463 crafted gear and an upgrade to 476 gear? come on blizz you can do better than that. even the epic boot recipe and helm are 522 but wait you can only make it if you can get haunted spirits from regular raids. if i could do regular raids i would not have to craft anything.

    1. well if Blizz ever does allow BS's to craft gear worth making , I bet it will be BoP so you can't AH it to make gold in game. Like the way they made it so simple to lvl a BS once you get to 90, guess it was too hard for the lazy people to get to 600 by working at it. Only took me 2-3 days to do it the hard way, don't see why they needed to change the process. Explains the sub's loss they have been suffering lately.

    2. I think the only way to make relevant gear in MoP is to purchase raid recipes and raid ingredients from the AH. They seem pretty stuck on that model since that's what we've gotten for the last 3 expansion cycles. I agree that it's not great for non-raiders or even non-raiding toons, but at least they have moved away from BoP raid drop recipes. I still haven't managed to get all of those.

I agree with you on the leveling process, I'm not sure how collecting mass quantities of ghost iron ore is radically better than collecting mass quantities of older ores. At least with the older stuff you had a shot of getting some cheap on the AH that someone dumped there. No one is going to dump ghost iron for 1g per ore.
