Isle of the Thunder King Quickie Preview

Lucky me, I popped onto the PTR today just as they were doing a 10 minute countdown to a server shutdown. Undaunted, I portaled out to the Isle of the Thunder King to see if I could learn anything of value. I arrived to a small camp very much under construction, with half naked dwarves hammering away. Piles of boxes are laying around and a handful of NPCs have daily quests for you. I did not have a chance to do any of these daily quests.

Another thing I noticed is that the NPCs here are from the Kirin Tor and Silver Covenant (I'm going to assume that Horde have a separate hub elsewhere). I'll have to complete some of the dailies to see whether we will indeed be working with Kirin Tor/Silver Covenant rep. The patch notes read that there will be a new Kirin Tor variant for this content, but who knows? There is also an NPC at the camp labeled as a "Silver Covenant Quartermaster". At this time I am unable to interact with him/her.

The official patch notes say that you can choose PVE or PVP for these quests, but my hunter was flagged as soon as she zoned in. I'm not sure exactly how this PVE/PVP thing is supposed to work, but I may learn more as I do the dailies.

As yet, no sign of the great forge! However, I see that the latest patch notes indicate a new recipe for "lightning steel" which also works as a discovery recipe. I can't wait to try that out! There are also a few new Tailoring recipes and a change to Imperial Silk that allows it to unlock discoveries as well. Should be some interesting information to uncover there :)

** UPDATE ** Got back onto the PTR tonight and was able to finish one daily quest. So far there are seven dailies available, most don't seem to be working. The one quest I did complete gave me (prepare yourselves) "5.2 Alliance" rep. So it seems that it will not be an existing faction. Also, the whole zone is PVP flagged and I could not figure out a way to get around that. After getting pounced twice by evil Hordies, I gave up researching for the day.

Feel free to leave any questions you might have about 5.2 professions in the Comments!

  1. 1) I assume PvP plans, both learned & vendor upgrade iLevel but existing gear do not gain iLevel?

    2) what about my poor unused crafting alts? All the existing BoP rep recipes and SoH roadblocks still exist? Are there new grinds (e.g. Firelands?)? In particular, what does a rep-less 85 BS need to use the lightning forge? 90? new-5.2-rep? 5.1rep?

    3) have you see blood spirits or is there a replacement?

    4) Any updates on the PvP silliness and how to avoid would be appreciated?

    1. Thus far I see no evidence that ilevel is going up on crafted PVP gear. That could certainly be done in a future build. At this point none of the profession changes have actually gotten in yet.

No change in the PVP status of the Isle, it still flags anyone who enters :(

No changes yet but I'll keep my eyes open for SoH/Blood Spirit vendors as the PTR progresses...

    2. Looks like Blizz just referenced this topic mere hours after I posted! "Dreadful Gladiator’s gear will be crafted. (5.2)" Blue Post in question.

Have you copied your character to a PvP server? I'm on Brill (EU), which is a PvE server, and it does not flag my character upon entering the isle via the Portal at the Shado-Pan camp (the character is Horde, though).

The Horde 5.2 Quartermaster is also not accessible yet (as of build 16467).

The Horde dailies seem to be working. I encountered only one that did not work (lighting torches in the Diremoor) and that was in the previous build.

    4. No, this test is on the US PVE server (Anasterian). I assume the builds are the same across the servers but I guess it could just be my server that's borked. Odd tho. I have not yet been able to do much of the daily quests due to the PVP going on. If they get this fixed I'll start working on them more frequently, but for now I'm doing the bare minimum.

  2. Looking forward to your investigation of the LSI! If the BS can only make BoP low level items (as per current Wowhead), then it will not be a market. If it is "raid-worthy weapons" then it is of some interest and BoE raid-worthy is something else!

    1. Agreed, that would be a particularly underwhelming approach to the problem of lost recipes. Given the high material cost of these "reborn" items, it's only fair to make them BOE so we can sell them. There's no reason to put a big price tag on a vanity transmog item that's self-only.

These also require SoH, which means the items will compete with crafted raid gear for materials. Again, bad idea if they are only meant as vanity gear.

    2. Thanks again for everything.

The currently-datamined BoP would be even more annoying since it means non-BS could not transmog - very niche.

The other question is the new discovery system.

Are there new plans, and do you want to fill up your old recipe book first? I.e. is it like inscription where even if you were missing many pre-MoP glyphs, you learned the MoP ones first? I.e. would a BS who knew every plan have a better chance of getting a new plan than someone who just learned the minimum to hit 600? Ofc, this presupposes that the discovered plans were valuable and not merely lower-level items for the completionist.

  3. Hi Kaliope, just wanted to say how much I appreciate your work on this blog and all you guides, and thank you for keeping up the great source of information. :)

  4. Work orders have been added in build 16486 and are available directly next to Farmer Yoon. As far as I can tell the other farm improvements (planting 4 seeds at once, buying the farm, master plow changes, ...) have not yet been added.

My character is already exalted so I can't say how much reputation the work orders give. The following work orders were available to my character: Klaxxi, Shado-Pan, Golden Lotus, August Celestials, Dominance Offensive.

A work order is split into two quests:

    a) Plant 8 vegetable seeds (e.g. Red Blossom Leak for Dominance Offensive)
    b) Harvest the 8 plants and acquire 40 vegetables

Work orders seem to be repeatable (not sure how often, they are not flagged as daily quests).

    1. Interesting, I'll have to check that out. It looks like they enabled several of the profession-related additions in the most recent build. I'm still trying to learn more about the Blacksmithing ones and I also noted some new stuff with Archaeology. Should be an interesting patch!

  5. I was just surprised about poor old engineering.

    The new pet, yeah!

Which leads to the new bag - which seems irrelevant since it is the same size as the existing bag at seemly twice the price of the other one (5 LS >>> 200 raw turtle)? unless it is for level 1 alts? (TBH, I sort of liked the original pts rumors where a boe bag was sold in halfhill and engineers made upgrades. )

Which leads to a new crafting mat, Stabilized Lightning Source? Will engineers be huddled around the Lightning forge with their BS cousins every day?

  7. I've heard interesting things about it being much easier to level BS in 5.2. Is this true? Is this chance already on PTR to test or is it still coming?

    1. I'm not sure where you're hearing this, but I see no sign of changes. I just checked the trainer recipes up to 100 on the PTR and they all look exactly the same as my recipe list.

    2. Ok, I found the information you're referring to, I was checking the trainer in SE VoEB instead of the vendor at the Shrine. I will do a premade toon and test this out :)

    3. Ok, having checked the new training "projects" I would have to debate over the description "easy". If easy means you don't care what you spend as long as you can just grind it out with a massive pile of ghost iron, then sure I would agree. However, if "easy" means spend as little as possible to get the skill points then I would characterize this as the opposite of easy. If you go with 100% training projects from 1-299 skill you'll need over 5000 ghost iron bars. The TUJ average price for a ghost iron bar is 6 gold and change, so you'll spend over 30k gold just to reach 300 skill and it ramps up from there to 500. Honestly I would be hard pressed to recommend this path.
