Faction Boosts for Alts Coming Soon

For those of you who missed the news yesterday (and my tweets), Blizzard announced that they are upgrading the faction system to incorporate boosted rates for alts:

Basically, once one of your characters has reached at least Revered reputation with a faction, all other characters on the same Battle.net account will then earn reputation with the same faction at twice the rate. Going one step further, and as an added bonus, your main character who reached Revered will also begin to earn double the reputation as he or she climbs to Exalted.

Here's a simplified break down:

  • Any single character earns Revered reputation with a faction
  • All other characters on the Battle.net account begin to earn double reputation for that one same faction
  • The Revered character earns double reputation as he or she works toward Exalted
Notice that this post does not specify which patch these changes will be applied to. I would like to think it's 5.1 but that may not happen. Knowing how the system is planned to work can at least give us the opportunity to prioritize our characters and decide which alts/factions to work on going into the change.

The main reason I chose to repost this announcement is because faction grinding was one of several contentious topics we discussed over the summer. Plus we've had a month or so to get used to the idea of account-wide features. I'm glad to see that they are expanding the notion of account-wide functionality to incorporate reputation values. To me this seems like a natural progression. Now that we have some new information about where Blizzard wants to take factions, I'm sure you guys will have plenty to say about it =)

  1. I can't understand what they intend with the second part, "your main character who reached Revered will also begin to earn double the reputation as he or she climbs to Exalted"

Is it going to take 6000 to reach honored, 12000 to reach revered, and 10500 to reach Exalted?

Why double the rep then? Why not just change the numbers?

Doubling the grind you've already done on another character makes sense, and is quite welcome.

My gut feeling is that if you leveled character a to revered, then if and only if you leveled other characters, that would help you level character a to exalted, sort of like rest-experience gives you more exp until you use it up, other characters will give character a rest-reputation towards Exalted.

Since quests that give rep, for any race in your faction also give some rep in all of the other races in your faction, I imagine alot more characters will be fully exalted with all of their faction's races in the future

  2. I posted on the official forums about this change (which I rarely do) because I don't like it. I agree that there is a problem but I think this is the worst of all possible solutions. First, I don't see why the effort that it takes to get to Exalted for the first toon needs to be nerfed at all. That doesn't make any sense. Many of the old reputations are already trivial, I'm looking at you Wrath of the Lich King; I think that current content should be gated. But even if you think Exalted is too hard, this solution is terrible. Why not simply double the rep gained from each quest or mob kill. Then it looks like a buff to your effort rather than a nerf to the Exalted status.

As for the alt question, yes this was a problem. My issue with their solution is that's almost as if Blizzard wants to force us to play alts. Making the mote of harmony BOP was bad enough but this is even worse. Why not just create a book like they did with Cold Weather Flying. I don't get why I should have to do the quests all over again on my alts after I've done them on my main. I guess if one is going to do it anyway faster is better but I don't see why the need to do it anyway is even there in the first place.

So I agree with you K that there needed to be a progression. I don't agree, however, that there is anything "natural" about this one and I would have liked to have seen a different model entirely.

  3. Most of the utility comes from revered, I will reach revered lotus today and swap immediately to Shado'pan. Exalted are mounts and by the time I buy them all its going to add up as well.

Note I don't care at all either way but I can see the reasoning behind it. Normally exalted is worth the push but for mop reps revered is the important part.

I had hoped this change would be hotfixed as It would be have been nice to get some benefit for my first alt climbing towards 90. 5.1 Is going to be a while yet:(

  4. Mop has completely destroyed my enthusiasm for playing my alts. There is no way I'm doing this on 5 chars. Rep should like all things now be account bound period.

    1. I'm in agreement with this post. I don't want to do everything over and over again just to get recipes on my alts and I most certainly don't want to do it for all of them (11 now). Of course, the thing in Molten Front isn't even rep based, it's World Tree Marks which I'm thoroughly tired of earning... Blecch.

  5. Completely off topic but I noticed today that you get arch points from doing dig sites in Azeroth (winterspring for me today) between 525-600. I did not get any points for the solve, though.
