I held off on this post for a while because I know some of you are profiting from the status quo. I've actually seen a bit of commentary out there on the research issue, but very little compared to the debates that have circulated for a long time over this. So before Mists of Pandaria launches, I want to share one of my discoveries about the Scroll of Wisdom recipe.
As I've reported previously, creating this item also helps you discover a new glyph recipe. When it was originally implemented, I was concerned that this might be a randomized chance. I'm happy to report that I've used it dozens of times now and I have never failed to learn a new recipe. You may have noticed there are about 3 dozen new glyph recipes to learn through this mechanic. I have dutifully learned them all but I ran out of Panda glyphs about two weeks ago.
The good news is that once you've exhausted the new glyphs, the Scroll of Wisdom research will start unlocking older research recipes for you. This included the Northrend research glyphs and the Book of Glyph Mastery recipes. I kept using the research and documenting the glyphs I learned so I could show you guy the kind of results you can expect:
Book: Life Tap | Hex | Shadows | Illusion (Arcane Barrage)
Northrend: Chaining | Solar Beam | Hemorrhage | Conflagrate | Cheap Shot (Rupture) | Grounding Totem
After two expansions of begging, it looks like we are finally getting the ability to bypass the Book of Glyph Mastery mechanic. I'm sure some of you will see this as good news and some as bad news. And it may take a while for this information to trickle down to the buying public, but you should be aware now that sales on books may be a weaker bet moving forward.
The upside for those of you who deal in these books is that they will not be useless. They can still be used to learn new glyphs. Essentially they provide a mechanism to bypass the daily cooldown. So I don't think they will lose their value. Since you no longer need them to discover certain glyphs, you'll lose some of the buyers who are willing to patiently collect them. But you'll always have the group of folks who are impatient and want to have everything now.
I had a stash of 10 books on the Beta realm and used them to see if they still work. It appears that they still pull from the same pool of glyph recipes. I was able to learn 10 new glyphs in a row, so that functionality seems to be unchanged. I hope this information is helpful to you guys, or if nothing else helps you plan for the future.
