MoP Beta Files: Stuck on Broken Archaeology

Normally I try not to post about roadblocks I run into during the Beta. Since I know things are going to be broken, it's not a shock when I get bitten. Plus, I don't particularly enjoy playing the blame/flame game as it doesn't tend to be very productive. However, I wanted to let you guys know that I've hit a problem with Archaeology for a couple of reasons. First... it was working previously. And second, I'm not sure what else to tackle since so many other professions are looking sketchy in their current form. I know some folks on the Beta have managed to cap things like Inscription and Leatherworking. But there are enough oddities in the progression of most that I'm hesitant to jump on the bandwagon. I'm hoping to hold out for a release date announcement and maybe plan around that.

While I can't share final details about Archaeology yet, I can share the little booger that stopped me in my tracks. I think it could be an interesting item once it's working: Pristine Mogu Coin. While collecting Mogu fragments I created a couple of artifacts and then started getting these. The kicker is that right now I don't get any skill points when I make one. And I've made about five in a row, so I feel like I'm wasting my fragments at this point. I can see that there are about a dozen Mogu artifacts in Wowhead but perhaps they aren't tied into the system just yet. Or my luck is horrible. Who knows? Either way, I think I'll hold off until the next build and see where we are.

So under the circumstances maybe I should field suggestions from the readers. Is there anything you'd like to know more about that doesn't involve leveling one of the professions? If so please share it in the Comment area and I'll check it out for you :)

  1. Specifically about archaeology, right now in live its too much rng trying to a specific reward from Archaeology (e.g. Zinrokh). Is it easier in MoP?

  2. Sadly I see no sign of change in that department. The Archaeology book works exactly the same with a random artifact being selected each time you solve the current one.

  3. Some interesting things for Archaeology. In the Vale of Blossoms there is a place called the Seat of Knowledge. In there is a new faction called Loremasters, which seem to be tied to Archaeology. Additionally Bran Bronzebeard is located there and is a vendor for Archaeology.

Since I have not tried leveling it I have no idea how to get/make "Restored Artifacts" but these can be turned in for all the different types of fragments, but can only be used at level 600 archaeology. Two items, which are not tied to a level, can be purchased by turning in Restored Artifacts are Lorewalker's Lodestone and Lorewalker's Map. The Loadstone will teleport you to a random pandarina digsite. The Map will randomize your dig sites in Pandaria, both are on a 30 min CD.

There is also a daily for archaeology and when completed you get 5 valor points and some gold. Since I have not done the daily, nor archaeology, am unsure if there are additional dailys. I believe the daily will also provide rep for the Loremasters. Currently I'm neutral with them so I do not know if any items are available on the Loremaster Quartermaster.

  4. I forgot to add that Bran Bronzebeard is also a trainer for Archaeology.

  5. Kaliope is at 90 now and she's been hanging out in the Seat of Knowledge, checking out the daily quests and such. So far there have been just two rotating - one for Pandaren and one for Mogu. I'm hoping they add more but I'm not sure if they will. Perhaps additional quests for other races would be good, from what I can tell in MoP they are pretty useless.

  6. The restored artifacts are made from crating an artifact you made. It might just be common artifacts, I haven't received any other type on the Beta. I've gotten a few of those Mogu Coins too, and while it says they give a quest I "don't meet the requirements for it." According to the two comments on Wowhead, someone was able to accept the quest and received restored artifacts for it, but once he/she reached 90 got the same message I did.

I also have only received those two daily quests. I hope there's a better way to level rep with them.

  7. Oh I forgot, crate your crafted artifact by right clicking on it. Doesn't need any special mats or anything.

  8. Do you have any insight Kaliope on Realm First for the gathering professions yet. I used your guide in Cata and got one so I thought I'd stick with the tried and true, if you plan on doing those again.

  9. Anon I think it's a little too early to do the Realm First planning, as much as we'd like to. Jade Forest is closed, so we can't even use that ATM which did look like a really fast way to level.
I do personally have some thoughts on how it'd look if you skip Jade Forest entirely and run straight to VotFW or Krasarang, but we can't know yet if that will be the best way. The density in Jade Forest may still be so high that it'd be worth it to just stay there.

With a couple of people having Gathermate 2 enabled and WOWDB and whatever, they will probably be tracking actual nodes soon so we can really see what will be fastest.

  10. Elnia: Yes, I do plan on creating leveling guides for MoP professions. I'm waiting for the professions to stabilize before I start documenting. Once we have a release date, I'll come up with a timeline for the various guides. I was starting to work on Archaeology when I hit the roadblock with the Pristine coins. I'm hoping we'll hear a release date in the next couple of weeks :)

  11. Interesting that you mention getting the same Mogu project every time. I didn't really pay attention to it before, but it seems I'm getting the same Mogu project every time as well. In my case it is "Warlord's Branding Iron" that keeps repeating, and I do still get skillups from those (I'm at 587/600 Archaeology now)
