MoP Beta Files: Zen Inscription

I want to qualify right up front that my Scribe is NOT on the beta realm. The character copy service has been throwing errors for several weeks now and I don't know when it will be fixed. Any Beta Scribes out there who want to chime in on my leveling theories are free to do so in the Comments =)

New recipes went up on the trainers last night with full recipe lists all the way to 600 skill. Right off the bat there are some holes in the progression from what I can see. Both of the new Zen inks are trained at 500 skill, but according to Wowhead the uncommon ink doesn't turn green until 540 skill. I think it's unlikely that we'd be able to use an ink to crank out 40 skill points, so I'm going to assume this is a temporary placement. Here are the new ink recipes and the Zen version of our Dust of Disappearance:

The first actual recipe Scribes learn at 525 is the Scroll of Wisdom. The good news is that this item appears to be our new research object, if the tooltip is accurate. Based on how many glyph recipes Wowhead is showing north of 525, I certainly hope this new research ability is the mechanism for learning them. There are no glyph recipes on the trainer past 495. The bad news is that I've already seen a comment on the Beta forums to indicate that this recipe is on a one day cooldown. I have no way to confirm this, but if that's the case then this is not a leveling recipe. Which is unfortunate since no other recipes are learned until 540 skill. I'm not clear on how you'd get there with the recipes as listed. Perhaps the Starlight Ink is intended to be used that way, but I'm pretty skeptical on that.

Once you manage to reach 540 you can learn four different shoulder enchant recipes which are not soulbound. It looks like these are intended to be used as leveling recipes since there are no others from the trainer until 560. Here are the recipes you unlock at 540:

At 560 you will learn a handful of BOE off-hand items and several staves. Three of these are epic BOA weapons and one is a rare BOE staff. The BOA staves all require 20 Scrolls of Wisdom, so they will take some time to create due to the cooldown mentioned above. The rare BOE staff does not use Scrolls but it does require 2 Spirit of Harmony (a very rare drop currently). Here are the various items you can make at 560 skill:

At 570 skill Scribes will learn another group of shoulder enchant recipes, these are epic quality and can be traded. Here are the epic shoulder enchant recipes:

The next wave of recipes at 575 are the self-only shoulder enchants with beefier stats:

After that comes a new Runescroll of Fortitude at 580 and finally the new Darkmoon card at 600. It would appear that the Runescroll is meant to get through the last 20 points but Wowhead isn't showing any helpful skill information on that. Here are the final two recipes from the Zen trainer:

Personally, I find it fishy that Wowhead shows a bunch of new glyph recipes that are yellow until 595. I think there's a good chance the new research ability is going to randomly unlock these glyphs and give us some of the fodder needed to level Inscription. If so, that scenario could make things challenging for Realm First hunters. Folks who don't rely on the one-day CD to learn glyphs will have to push through the progression with rare/epic items and shoulder scrolls. I'll be curious to see how that plays out :)

  1. I can confirm the Scroll of Wisdom recipe has two effects.

1 - It provides a Scroll of Wisdom object in your inventory, which is a building block used for the better Mists inscription stuff. This item is currently Bind-on-pickup.

    2 - It researches a new glyph.

Use of this recipe is on a daily cooldown (resetting at midnight server time).

I have done this research twice so far, and have learned two monk glyphs.

The glyphs are both orange to me (I am skill 547 or so) and provide three skill points per create.

  2. I've leveled up to 600, and written up a summary at the Consortium - http://stormspire.net/professions/6343-mop-inscription-details.html . Currently realm first is trivially easy, essentially defined by how fast one can gather herbs.

  3. Thanks for the link El :) It confirms some of my guesses, but I still wonder about the Scroll of Wisdom. It may not be possible to know this just yet, but does it *always* teach a new glyph recipe? The tooltip says it "may" unlock a new recipe, which generally indicates a chance of failure. This content only went out yesterday, but perhaps you guys can report back and let us know if this scroll has a fail rate? That would be important to know for Realm First hunters, since the leveling process seems to hinge quite heavily on crafting researched glyphs.

    1. During a full week of researching I have never failed to discover a glyph. It is a reasonable assumption that there is no chance of failure.

    2. That's great! I just got my Scribe to the beta realm, so I hope to start working on the daily scroll as well. I hope our anonymous friend is right and the "may" is merely to cover folks who've already learned all the new glyphs.

    3. I've now discovered what appears to be everything (see http://stormspire.net/professions/6722-scroll-wisdom-glyphs.html ) and never had a failure. I did research one named glyph (Spinning Fire Blossom) on 2 separate days, but there was probably a server shortly afterwards or some similar glitch (the EU server has been very unstable of late).

  4. I've dont the scroll of wisdom thing 2x and gotten 2 priest glyphs... I burnt thru most of my pigments last night and made it to 600... the staffs still dont have the right component on the inscription trainer, at least not on Lost Isles... the shoulder inscriptions can be made and sold on the AH... very nice actually. on Lost Isle I saw them for 12k or so last night.

    1. Plain wooden staff is still unavailable, and the spirits of harmony are now BOP.

  5. Are they going to give us BoA weapons from others professions too? That staf looks powerful :]

  6. I have not heard any word on other professions being included, although I think it's a reasonable idea. Maybe Inscription is the test case and they will roll it out to others if things go well with this first wave of items.

    1. I was sad when I realized that the opportunity cost of the il476 staff is too high for me to be making anytime soon. Giving up 20 Darkmoon cards is huge; my guess is getting a DMC for my main and selling a second DMC and buying something with the proceeds will be better than making the epic staff. It is hard for me to see that being rational to do before winter when it can help out third tier alts.

I am glad there are BoA staves. ( The il424 staff will help for leveling, but that is really only a few hours. ) But they are disappointing once you get the details.
Perhaps knowing they were not that useful is why Blizzard was comfortable with giving them to scribes but not BS?

  7. Kalliope, I think the tooltip says -may- because at some point you will run out of glyphs to learn, at which time it will only create a Scroll of Wisdom.

  8. Any word on whether or not existing glyphs will be changed to the new glyphs with the same item number or if they will turn into burnt scrolls like with the roll-out of Cataclysm? I wanted to know so I can plan on when to restock my glyphs (several bank tabs of ink so far).

  9. does anyone know if the book of Glyph Mastery be used to learn any of the new Glyphs?

  10. Are the Darkmoon cards trainable in Org/Stormwind?

  11. With patch 5.0.4 landing August 28th and everyone reworking their character's spec and glyphs, will all the changes to glyphs and Inscription also land that day?
