Maelstrom Crystal Shatter Coming in 4.3

I'm sure most of you know by now that Enchanters will be receiving a recipe in the upcoming patch to turn a maelstrom crystal into heavenly shards. One of my readers posted a question about this, so I thought I'd go ahead and do a quick little post on it. This recipe can be learned from the trainer at 515 skill and it's still yellow at 525. For folks who haven't yet leveled their Enchanter this would actually be a decent leveling recipe. When you shatter the maelstrom crystal you get 2 heavenly shards, which economically is actually a good deal. I'm sure once it goes live the heavenly shard prices will start dropping though. I didn't really expect this to have a cooldown of any kind, but I went ahead and tested to make sure. There's no cooldown on this recipe :)

  1. Do you have any insight on epic gems? I read somewhere that they were only going to be available from raids but I couldn't find a blue post on that. Or will they be prospected?

  2. I came across this information on Wowhead's PTR section.

I know this is probably datamined, but it certainly feels like accurate information.

  3. I've been monitoring the Alchemy trainer and seen no sign of a transmute. If this recipe is accurate, it looks like any transmute that is available will most probably be a raid drop item.

  4. The only information we have on epic gems is a blue post indicating that they would be a raid drop item. I've seen no evidence to the contrary, so I assume that's the plan.

  5. I'm still a little disappointed that all the money's going to the raiders again. They already make a ton through BoEs (not to mention raiding itself), now they get an exclusive corner of the market as well.
And of course, if your toon is not decked out in epic gems, people will ridicule you if you want in on a pug :/

Yes, I don't buy the "epic rareness" of the new gems or recipes - it'll be high drops during the first few weeks, then a hotfix that gets it back to "normal" etc. :( And by the time we can get to the stuff, it'll be available for 100g on the AH, or we have to beg for a 10g tip cutting it.

  6. Kaliope.

Reading the items from wowhead makes me think that maybe there are epic gem transmutes but that the recipe for the transmutes is not from the trainer nor from a raid drop but rather a random drop from the goodie bag for 4 token from which you get the epic gem cuts.

Given that recipes are BOP that would only work if one were both a JC/Alchemist. But I wonder if that's the type of deal they have in mind. It would be especially nice if that was the case only the transmute recipe was BOE so that a JC could either use it themselves or sell it on the AH.

  7. I agree with you guys on the whole premise of raiders ending up with the best recipes, I would prefer that Blizzard didn't skew so heavily in that direction. By the time 4.3 hits our current crafted items will all be obsolete except for Firelands raid drop recipes. I think that's vastly unfair to the majority of crafters in the game. I posted on this issue in the official profession forums and pretty much said that I don't think it's fair to give raid quality recipes exclusively to raiders while non-raiders are completely locked out of quality craftables. Whether they are willing to rethink this policy, I don't know.

As for the transmute recipes, I don't think you need to be a JC and Alchemist to benefit. Most likely the JC will be able to use the gem cut recipes and have to trash the transmute recipes, Alchemists will vendor the JC recipes and use the transmute ones. If you had both you would clearly benefit more, but I doubt you'd have to be both. In terms of where the recipe is sourced, we only know that its BoP. It could come from the goodie bag, raid mobs or even chest loot for killing a boss. I'm not willing to speculate a whole lot at this time other than to assume that it will be available only to raiders.
