Magnus the "friendly ghost" vendor is back!

I hope you guys are enjoying the new content with Firelands trash runs and daily quests at the Molten Front. The undocumented fixes started trickling in last week and I just investigated a new one for you. One of our readers left an anonymous tip that Magnus had been spotted recently at Scholomance, so I trekked out to Western Plaguelands to check it out.

I decided to take a new character on the trip because most of the folks who were upset about losing Magnus were playing new toons. They had no way to purchase his recipes because the trinket from Eva Sarkhoff was no longer obtainable. In fact, Eva has been completely removed. So the classic quest to get her trinket and use it to see Magnus the friendly ghost has been gone for a while now. Unfortunately this didn't stop folks from wanting his recipes, specifically the Transmute Water to Air recipe. It seems that Essence of Air is fairly difficult to collect in bulk, so Alchemists were hoping to use the transmute for it.

I happen to have a mage that I've been leveling who is also my junior Alchemist. Since she's been a bank toon for the last 5+ years, she's done very little classic content. I took her out to Western Plaguelands to see what it would take for her to purchase from Magnus. As it turns out, not much. I found him inside the Smithy at Caer Darrow as soon as I arrived. I didn't need the trinket or any quests to see him. He's a ghost NPC, so he's not very visible unless you know to look for him. He is friendly to Alliance and Horde characters, and there does not appear to be any prerequisite quests to interact with him.

For those of you who missed out on the transmute recipe, be sure to visit Magnus the next time you're in the northern part of Eastern Kingdoms. He also has a rare pattern that might be of interest for our Blacksmithing completionists out there.

Please let me know if you run into any other undocumented tradeskill changes and I'll feature them in a blog post as well!

  1. Is there a cooldown on this transmute?

  2. Yes, this is on the shared cooldown with the other elemental transmutes. This recipe would primarily be useful to a low-level alchemist who didn't have the more profitable transmute recipes.

  3. Oh, awesome! I was bummed about not getting some of the blacksmithing plans from him for my BS, now I can!

  4. Great news, thanks!

(Also useful for people trying to get those last engineering pets without paying 100+ gold for an Essence of Air...)

  5. ** Important ** Please note that all of the recipes (listed here: http://www.wowhead.com/npc=11278) except for Plans: Storm Gauntlets are all BOP. So the 3 other BS plans and the two Alc recipes need to be picked up directly by your Blacksmiths and Alchemists, respectively.

  7. thanks for this info Kaliope :)

on an unrelated note, a question about MH dailies: do you know if, when you transition from phase 2 to phase 3, you keep or you lose all the marks? Being one of the people that missed 1 daily for 2 marks, I am wondering should I do all the quests in phase 2 or just one quest to bring me to 150 marks and then hand them in.
Or should I do all quests, if the marks do not reset? much appreciated if you know the asnwer to this :)

  8. Anon: I found myself in the same boat on my hunter, which really pisses me off. I missed one quest over the last 11 days and I was unable to hit the 150 mark yesterday. So now I've missed out on a day of Phase 3 quest, which allows you collect 16 additional marks.

I would turn in your 150 as soon as you get them, by doing so you will unlock Phase 3 and those extra quests I mentioned. I did them on my druid yesterday and she is now 18 marks ahead of my hunter instead of just 2. I wish Blizz hadn't designed the cutoffs to be so unforgiving as one small hiccup puts you permanently behind.

When you turn in the 150 marks, you lose them and are back to zero. You will then be in Phase 3 with more quests unlocked at the Molten Front. On your first day you'll collect an additional 16 tokens (beyond the 150 you turned in). At the end of Day 1 you should have 17 tokens (16 plus the one leftover from Phase 2). Thereafter you'll be collecting about 25 tokens per day if you do every quest every day.

  9. Awesome tip, thanks very much for it. Now instead of paying 100g plus for Essence of Air, I can transmute 5g Essence of Water.

That is, until the news about this gets out, then I suspect the price of Essence of Water will be going up. Although it seems Water might be easier to farm, or there isn't any demand, as it is very cheap.

Things to do: buy Essence of Water. Get recipe.
