Engineering Recipes from the Cataclysm Beta

Engineering recipes have been on the Beta Realm for a while now, but they were in horrible disarray. A good percentage actually had WotLK ingredients, which is a sure sign that those no-good goblins had been ingesting dangerous substances. I didn't think it would be useful to anyone to discuss that situation, but the most recent build has improved the recipes greatly.

Profession Vendors in new Beta Build (13221)

Today we got a new build in the Beta and there's some new profession changes finally. I heard a rumor in chat that there were recipe vendors in Twilight Highlands, so as soon as the servers came back up I went to check it out. I did indeed find some trade NPCs including vendors at Highbank, the first quest hub. There's a metal trader who sells Blacksmithing recipes for 20 Elementium Bars, 2 Hardened Elementium Bars, or 5 Pyrium Bars. The recipes include rare PVP gear sets, crafted epic gear, a level 85 shield spike, the new belt buckle, a new weapon chain and rare 85 weapons. From what I can tell most of these items were in my last Blacksmithing post. Some of those recipes were removed from the trainer and put on the Metal trader instead, plus some modifications to ingredients and quality levels.

I Got Nothin'

Ok, so I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out what to talk about today. It's been a week since my last post... I'm not even finding cool stuff to tweet lately. I wish I had something new or interesting to share, but it's been awhile since we've had a new Beta build. I've been in a holding pattern for the past week. I'd love to bring you guys something new, but there's just not much going on at the moment. Honestly, I'm getting a bit nervous because we've got six weeks until launch and most professions still aren't fully implemented.

I watched the Blizzcon live stream over the weekend hoping for some news. Unfortunately there was very little news period. Even less relating to professions. I believe I gleaned two things. No new melee enchant for Hunters anytime soon. And no plans to make old raid recipes available in new way. Yawn.

On the plus side, digital downloading of the Cataclysm client so we plan play right away. Woot! And servers going Live at 12am PST. Double Woot! That means those of us on the West Coast actually have a chance at Realm Firsts. But as one of our commenters pointed out, East Coast players have to stay up half the night to play. Not sure I consider this a major problem - if you're going for a Realm First you wouldn't be getting sleep anyways.

So there's my 2cp, what do you guys wanna talk about? Open post :)

Leveling Herbalism 450-525 (BETA)

This may be hard to believe, but I've actually leveled Herbalism three times in the Beta. The first time was on a pre-made character which I leveled from the ground up. Unfortunately she was already level 82 by the time Illustrious Herbalism was implemented, which led to the second leveling test. The second round was taking a level 80 through the same 450-525 range, which I was able to do successfully. I've also just completed a third test which I'll discuss at the end of this post.

New Cata Build + Status Update

I'm working late today to bring breaking news from the Beta front -- as opposed to goofing around late, which I always do! Anyway they finally got the servers back up so I'm running around checking everything. I suspect many of you have questions and keep wondering why I ignore certain professions. So I thought for this build I would go through everything and give a status update.

Comparison of Various XP options in Cataclysm

I was poking around in a thread on the Consortium's forums about how best to jump start the leveling process for maximum efficiency after the Cataclysm launch. In reading the various strategies, it occurred to me that there hasn't been a true head-to-head comparison of the different ways which we'll be able to get XP in the future. So I took it upon myself to collect some numbers.

For those planning to stockpile a bunch of WotLK quests for instant XP increases, here's the numbers from some current dailies on a level 80 character:

Final Archaeology Guide (BETA)

Yes, yes I'm aware that the pre-Cataclysm patch is going to drop today. I don't think you guys need me to tell you what to do. Sell 'em if you got 'em, otherwise have fun playing with your hosed up characters ;)

I know you guys will be bored during the downtime and have nothing to read, so I'm posting my Archaeology Guide today instead. Naturally there may be changes that impact this information, but otherwise it should be pretty comprehensive. I'll make it nice and pretty when I add it to our web site, there's nothing fancy here for now. Enjoy!

Blacksmithing Guide to Cataclysm Buyers

It has been brought to my attention that I neglected to post my Blacksmithing guide for selling lowbie gear in Cataclysm (thank you Jennifer for the virtual bonk). Sadly I've still procrastinated this posting, but I'm forcing myself to squeeze it in now. There's not any new and exciting tradeskill content in the current build, so I'm trying to tackle other loose ends...

Archaeology in the Home Stretch (BETA)

Last night I finally got to the 525 cap in Archaeology. I made a point to track my time over the last 55 points in order to further quantify the time commitment. From 470 to 500 I spent 1 hour and 40 minutes collecting fragments and completed six artifacts. Between 500 and 525 I spend 2 hours and 13 minutes collecting fragments and completed another six artifacts. The total time taken to go from 470 to 525 was 3 hours and 53 minutes and average time spent per artifact was 19.4 minutes. The first 25 points went faster because I already had some partial artifacts when I started the timed segments.
