Cataclysm Jewelcrafting: 450-475

Lots of new Jewelcrafting recipes went into the latest Beta build, but no new Jewelcrafting recipes on the trainer. From this I assume there won't be any new recipes, although I hope I'm wrong on that. The last 25 points of Illustrious look pretty horrifying (Fire Prism on 1 day CD. Gag.) The 500+ recipes are already blocked off by the daily quest, I don't see a reason to make leveling JC even worse with daily cooldowns for required leveling recipes.

I finally gave up waiting and leveled a bit on my Jewelcrafter. I couldn't get the daily quest to pop for her, so I thought I'd just go in a little bit and see if I could get past whatever glitch was making the quest giver ignore me. Oddly enough, the daily quest popped right up when I hit 475 skill. I was able to do today's quest and I grabbed a screenshot of yesterday's quest from one of my premade characters. I also went over to the Horde side and got their daily :) Here are three of the new Jewelcrafting quests:

I did two of these quests - Elemental Goo and Latest Fashion. For Elemental Goo you just go out and kill elementals until you get 10 goo. The drop rate was kinda crummy, I had to kill over two dozen elementals. Hopefully they'll tweak that before launch. The other one was quick and easy, I just ran around Orgrimmar and tossed stardust on people. The last one also looks pretty easy, make 3 solid zephyrite and turn them in.

In case you guys were wondering, the "perfect" gem cutting ability works on the new gems. I made several perfect cuts while I was leveling up. They have +35 stat value instead of +30 for the normals. The uncommon gems are trainable at 425 and will be yellow to you at 450. They turn green at 467, so you can eek a good 10 points out of them. After that you have to start making jewelry.

The uncommon jewelry recipes all have random stats when crafted. So far most of the random pieces I've gotten have been pretty decent. I did get one "whale" item out of 12 crafted pieces, so that's not horrible. I just sent that one to my enchanter, lol! I discovered something interesting though. Apparently our random jewelry recipes can occasionally proc a blue version. I was pretty tickled when I spotted this - check it out:

All five of these are the same recipe: Hessonite Band. Four of them came out normal greens with various stats typical for one of the classes. One of them came out a blue with a higher iLevel and better stats. Pretty neat right? I'm not sure what the proc rate is, but I'll have to make more jewelry to level up so hopefully I'll get a better idea on that.

I'm gonna hold on Jewelcrafting for a bit longer, I'd like to see if we can get some new recipes in the next week or two. If not I'll go ahead and move forward with it, but for now this is all I'm planning to post. Feel free to submit any questions you have... that don't involve leveling more!

  1. Hi Kali,

I'm sort of confused about what will happen to the WRATH dailies. Will I have to keep doing those too, to get all of the recipes or will the recipes I haven't gotten yet be trained by the Cata trainers?

Also, a great big thank you for all of your hard work. I really appreciate all I have learned from you over the past year or so.

  2. Hi Io - so glad you've enjoyed the site! The Wrath dailies are still active, I've popped into Dalaran a few times and they are still there. I suspect Blizzard will consider those recipes obsolete and make no effort to roll them over to the trainer. Our level 70 epic recipes are still languishing in Quel'Danas, I expect WotLK recipes will be much the same.

  3. Hi Kali :) amazing blog. Sounds like JC doesn't require getting to the phased area (ie leveling to 84) atm then? Any idea of whether any of the other profs will be like this?

I'm trying to plan out proffessions on my various alts, so will shuffle things around to minimise the number of alts I need to get to 84 :)

  4. Hi Kali,
I've had a few blue procs from both LW and tailoring on the beta, too. My guess (I'll have to test further) is that this goes for all "random stats" items.

  5. 1) like @Luke - can a level 80 JC alt get to 525? What level alt can reasonably do the JC daily?

    2) Any word on level requirements for gems? Can I put cata gems in level 80 gear? 70? I read rumors.

    Thanks again!

  6. Luke: At this time JC does not require access to the phased 84 area. The vendor for JC recipes is right by the trainer in SW/Org. The vendors in Highbank are Leather, Tailoring, Smithing, Enchanting. Enchanting appears to be exempt from the leveling block as the trainer continues to offer recipes up to 510 which stay yellow until 520. For alt leveling it looks like LW/TL/BS are the blocked professions.

Maria: Thanks for the info! I haven't tested LW or TL yet, so I didn't realize those were also making random blue items.

Hagu: Right now I don't see any reason a level 80 couldn't get 525 JC. I did the Elemental Goo quest in Mount Hyjal and found several different elementals that dropped the goo, including the ones at Nordrassil. Of the three quests I've seen so far, all could be managed by a level 80.

Gem requirements for the uncommon Cata gems are iLevel 285. This means you will not be able to put any Cata gems into any WotLK gear. That could change before launch, but right now Cata gems are only for Cata gear.

  7. Are the jewelcrafting dailies available day one with 450 jewelcrafting skill and it really was a bug, or are they not available to jc'ers until we hit 475?

    Thanks!

  8. Steve: I really don't know if this is intended. All I can tell you is that my JC from live was unable to access the daily quest until she hit 475 skill. I was standing near the trainer/vendor at the time, so it was pretty obvious when it popped.

This morning when I log into a premade level 80 with max JC, the quest giver has no quest available. From this I would guess that you still have to reach 475 skill to activate the daily quest. That could change before launch, but just in case you should be prepared. Farm 8-10 stacks of ore before you head in to see her, that should give you enough prospects to collect the 25 or so gems needed to hit 475.

  9. Thank you very much! Now to fight off the crowds for the ore :) Although I have been stocking up on some wrath epic gems to cut as well to hopefully squeek out 5-10 points as well.

  10. According to Wowhead (http://cata.wowhead.com/skill=755#recipes:0-14+1) its now possible to skill up to 525 without using Fire Prism since metagems grant skillpoints from 490 to 525. Can U confirm this?

thanks for a great blog <3

  11. I can't confirm it just yet, but I'll be leveling Jewelcrafting this weekend. If there's any way to get to 525, I will figure it out and post it in the guide. Same with Blacksmithing, as my level 81 hunter cannot access the vendors in Twilight Highlands.

And you're welcome, thanks for stopping by!

  12. "Farm 8-10 stacks of ore before you head in to see her, that should give you enough prospects to collect the 25 or so gems needed to hit 475."

Which ore, if you would? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Either Cataclysm ore would be fine (elementium or obsidium). I assume you'll probably have obsidium since that's the first ore you'll run into while Mining. However if you're purchasing ore, you could easily use elementium instead. Both ores have the same gem tables, just as cobalt/saronite do now.

    ReplyDelete
  14. You need 475 JC to prospect elementium ore, so definitely start with obsidium.

    ReplyDelete
  15. This is true, thank you Allard. You need at least enough obsidium to reach 475 skill. Or enough green gems to hit that point, if for some reason it's easier to buy uncut gems than ore.

  16. Any idea if the fasion one requires lvl 80+ mobs or if you can just do it on 10 humanoids close to Org?

Anyone see any other dailies while on the beta these were the only 3 I found and I could not find any more on wowhead etc.

    ReplyDelete
  17. For the fashion quest do you need to use it on lvl 80+ mobs or will low lvl humanoids work?

Anyone seen any other dailies besides these three, I only saw these on the beta

    ReplyDelete
  18. Charliz: Yes, you can do the sparkle dust on any mob. I've dusted NPCs in Orgrimmar and Stormwind, so I know it's allowed :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thanks for the answer on that, so basically the cut 3 gems and dust quests can be done from Org, or sw but if you get the goo quest your stuck huffing it out to a cata zone.

Has anyone seen any quests besides these? I always got the cut 3 solid quest, also be interesting to know if horde and alliance get the same quest each day =)

  20. Aside from the quests listed here, the others that I saw were cut gem quests. I have a screenshot of one of those that I can add here, I believe there are one or two others of the same ilk. On Wowhead they show three total that involve gem cuts, plus the Goo quest and the sparkle dust.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Be interested to see the other dailies you have SS of, sounds like a lot of cuts, dusts and goo, the goo being the longest and hardest to do BY FAR.

Anyone know if alliance and horde get the same daily each day, I know the questgiver is different now would be interesting to see if they got the same daily.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Charliz not sure if the Horde and Alliance get the same quests each day, I would think they would to keep things fair.

Just a correction from reading above if I am not mistaken Elementium has a much higher chance to yield blue quality gems than Obsidium, let me know if I am incorrect on that.

    ReplyDelete
  23. My anecdotal experience says you are correct about rare gems being more common with elementium, but I think we'll need some solid data from Wowhead to quantify the actual drop rates. I've been suggesting that everyone switch to elementium as soon as they can prospect it (475 skill) due to the problems with collecting obsidium in phased areas. We don't know enough about gem drop rates right now to make meaningful suggestions for launch day, so it's probably best to stick with the ore that will be easier to acquire (elementium).

For a while in the Beta I was getting more green gems from obsidium than elementium, but this could easily just be situation where the drop tables were in flux at that time. I can't be certain that it will still be the case next week.
