The Cataclysm Mining Report

One of the ideas we talked about this summer was powerleveling mining in Cataclysm. In my guest post on Just My Two Copper, I recommended that crafters level up their gathering skills on the first day or so. Whether you then sell your wares to others or use them to quickly level another trade is up to you. The plan being that you'll be selling the materials that are in high demand by other crafters or the leveling gear sorely needed by power levelers. Either way you win :)

But in the Beta I discovered that access to Deepholm was by level-restricted portal only, which seemed to derail my power-leveling recommendation. I'm happy to report that this is not the case as of this writing (these things are always subject to change). Yesterday I leveled mining all the way to 525 on my level 82 rogue. I bypassed Deepholm completely and went straight from Mount Hyjal to Twilight Highlands to hit the Mining cap. Since the Highlands are right next to Loch Modan, anyone can get there via flying mount. I had no problem getting around and aggro was minimal.

Just to confirm the finding, I recruited a level 80 death knight to run through the same routes this afternoon. She was able to easily level mining to 525 with only a few aggro attacks. I didn't personally handle this task, but my recruit estimates that she spent about an hour on the process which included a bit of "piddling around". I assume she means exploring and that no actual puddles were created.

So there you have it, it's still possible to level Mining quickly for those who want to get a jump on the competition when Cataclysm is Released. If you have any other Mining questions, feel free to leave them in the Comments!

  1. Thanks for the tip. Definately want to get maxed mining first and start dumping all the ores and bars on the AH for mega-deman price gouging.

  2. I can't wait have a miner and herb on dk gonna get the 310% and extra boost gonna get there fast and mine like a bat out of hell.

  3. What kind of xp did the DK get? I understand we now get xp from mining?

  4. Unfortunately that information wasn't documented. She didn't realize she was getting XP because the floating text is currently messed up. Right now it scrolls up the side of the screen and at an angle. It's really hard to see and sometimes doesn't show up at all.

However, I plan to run my Hunter through the same routine for Herbalism. I will make a point to check that and report on it :)

  6. In Wrath, many people levelled an alt to 65 and then mining to 450 to get the titansteel transmute.
Is there a similar transmute at maximum mining in Cataclysm, and do you think it will be possible to have a level 75 alt max level mining in the new zones?
Thanks for all the invaluable insights. Regards

  7. Right now there's not a titansteel equivalent on the Mining trainer. The only Cata recipes he offers are Cut Obsidian, Elementium and Pyrite. However, the Blacksmithing trainer teaches recipes that require "Ebonsteel" so it looks like we'll get a new version at some point. It's hard to predict what the requirement will be for that.

As for the practicality of using a level 75 to mine in an 85 zone, that could be more difficult. Level 85 mobs have over 70k health and I'm told by my guildie that they "hit like a truck". From my informal tests I'm seeing 3k-4k hits, which would be hard for a level 75 to survive. I would suggest if you plan to take a lowbie into Twilight Highlands that it should be one with a strong escape mechanic.

  8. Tonite I took my lvl 80 druid herbalist/miner to Mt. Hyjal to start levelling mining. I posted my herbing results from the Obsidian Forest in the Cataclysm Gathering thread last night.

I didn’t keep track of the Cinderbloom, but there was lots of it around. I only saw a couple of spawns of Azshara’s Veil and ended up with 36 of them. In the areas I mainly was there was not any Stormvine and I ended up with just two stacks. It didn't seem to me that there was as many Stormvine spawns as there were Cinderbloom in the areas where both were found. For some reason the JCing trainers will not allow me to train Illustrious JCing on an alt, so I can't comment on that yet.

In terms of mining, I went from 450 to 525. For some reason I did not get any experience or gold when mining. I ended up with 22 stacks of Obsidian Shards, 2 Nightstone, 1 Hesonite, and 1 Ember Topaz (these all dropped after I was over 510 mining). Similarly to herbing, once I got over 510, it took more than one node to give a skill up. It took 28 nodes to get me from 522 to 523, but mostly it was 2 to 12 nodes.

As regards levelling mining/herbing to 525 on a level 75 character, I think it is quite doable as there are several spawns that have no mobs around so no aggro. It would be a slow process I would think.

  9. So what zones should the progression be to mine in? i.e. Saronite in Sholozar and Cobalt in Borean Tundra/Howling Fjord , what are the Cata equivalent.

  10. The zones I used were Mount Hyjal and Twilight Highlands. Vashj'ir and Uldum are probably also viable. Deepholm is acceptable if you're already 82 when you choose to level Mining. The biggest variable will be avoiding other players so you can actually find ore, otherwise I think any zone is fine.

  11. Im thinking of pushing for realm first (lame I know). So I'll be 80 I just wasnt sure what the starting zones were or how they progress level wise. Are those the zones your DK recruit used as well?

  12. Yes, she started in Mount Hyjal and mined Obsidium until 475. Once you reach 475 you can pick up Elementium. At that point she switched to Twilight Highlands and mined Elementium all the way to 525. A glove enchant may help speed up the transition.

New build on the beta servers, and Smelt Ebonsteel is available at skill level 500 mining with no CD.

  14. Will the mining trainer be in SW for the Cataclysm level ores?

  15. Yes, the normal trainers in major cities should all have Illustrious level professions on Tuesday. I've updated my recipe listings to reflect this change:

  16. What about flying in Mt. Hyjal? Will I need somesort of "flight license"? I'm trying to finish my pre-midnight checklist...

    -- Train herbalism and mining
    -- Gatherer glove enchant
    -- Empty profession-specific bags
    -- Cataclysm snatch list
    -- Train flying?

    Anything I'm missing?

  17. Yes, you will need to pick up Azeroth flight training from one of the trainers near the flightmaster in a major city. They all have the proper training, just make sure you learn it before you leave your home city.

  18. Kaliope, great hearing you on the recent Call to Auction podcast, and thanks for this report as well. You've convinced me to spend day 1-3 mining up pretty hard and supplying the crafters.

  22. Great guide for Cataclysm mining. As soon as Cata went live last night, I was in Dalaran waiting to get Illustrius mining and old world flight. I took off directly to WG and had it all to myself. Two laps and I was 475 (a bit less than 15 minutes from Cata going live). Hearthed to IF and flew to TH. Took a few minutes to fly around and hit nodes along mountain borders then found the river. Did laps up one side of the river and down the other. I had the whole place to myself again so absolutely no competition in either area for nodes (and there were a ton of them). Hit 525 in about 25-30 minutes of this. Total time from 450 to 525 was 40-45 minutes. Oh yeah, got Realm First too. Thanks much for the pointers and thought that went into your guide!
