Engineer's Guide to Cataclysm Buyers

Yep, it's time for another installment of "How to Get Money from a Goblin". Or a wolf-man. Something like that. Today we're going to take a look at Engineering. I know this isn't a money-making profession. We used to be able to provide items for a handful of quests in the game, but most of those have been removed. Only one is still available and it's a Northrend quest:

Overcharged Capacitor (Just a Few More Things, Alliance)

There will be lots of folks doing vanilla quests the first few weeks of Cataclysm, leveling up their worgens and goblins. Engineers would do well to capitalize on those players by making quest items they'll be needing. I suspect the leveling action will drop off after a few weeks, once players get tired of their alt and go back to their main toon. But I think the draw of the new races will be enough to get 2-3 weeks of lowbie sales out of them.

Don't forget that we can make a few decent items for other players too. We just don't have the wide variety that most professions get. However, we can craft guns for the glut of baby hunters I expect to see running around. We also have a very nice trinket recipe that I believe will be at the top of every 40-something's wish list:

High-powered Flashlight (+hit rating = win)
Lovingly Crafted Boomstick
Mithril Heavy-bore Rifle (best uncommon weapon for 30-39 hunters)
Mithril Blunderbuss (best uncommon ranged item for rogues/warriors 30-39)
Thorium Rifle (2nd best uncommon weapon for 40-49 hunters)

Next up is the cross-trade action. Engineers can make a few items that other crafters need. Again, I think people will be leveling professions on their new alts. Providing these crafted materials could be good business. Here are the items that Engineers make for other professionals:

Goblin Rocket Fuel recipe (for Alchemists)
Salt Shaker (Leatherworking: creates Refined Deeprock Salt)
Inlaid Mithril Cylinder plans (for Blacksmiths)

We can also make scopes for ranged weapons, any of the various scope recipes will probably be viable sales items. The bevy of new toons should also rejuvenate our non-combat pet market. In addition, you might want to experiment with consumable items like the Discombobulator Ray and EZ-Thro Dynamite. Both of those can be used by non-engineers.

I hope this gives you tinkerers out there some ideas for items to stockpile for Cataclysm. If there's anything I've missed, please post it in the Comments!

  1. The only other item I make occasional gold off of is the Aquadynamic Fish Attractors. Those sell at a steady rate, but sometimes are barely more than the material cost.

  2. Weird, I had assumed that Engie fishing lures were dead now due to the glut of free lures coming out of the daily Fishing quest. Thanks for the tip!

  3. So has the Deadly Blunderbuss requiring quest been removed? I'm also sure you can sell squirrel boxes like mad then too.

  4. Salt Shaker creates REFINED Deeprock Salt. :)

  5. The Horde quest for Deadly Blunderbuss is still listed for now, but Ashenvale is getting a serious revamp so it may not stay. I'll put that on my check list for the Beta :)

I'm sure all of the non-combat pets will sell for a few week, so make whatever you have!

  6. Ok, I took a premade Belf to Ashenvale and there's no sign of Pixel - the quest giver for the Blunderbuss quest. I'm guessing she got written off the show... will continue to check other quests as I have time :)

  9. Checking Wowhead now, it seems all the quests that required engineering items have been removed, except Gizmo for Warug. I haven't checked them personally in game nor looked for the Alliance only ones.

  10. Ouch, you're right. Wowhead was such a mess during Beta that it was very difficult for me to confirm this type of thing. But as of now only the Gizmo quest you mentioned and the Overcharged Capacitor are functional quests. Poor Engineers getting the shaft again :(
