State of the Tome

Sorry peeps, I know I've been MIA for a couple of weeks.  It's been a hectic holiday season and I'd hoped to get caught up on my backlog of work with my extra free time.  Unfortunately I had a house guest over the holidays, so my free time kinda got consumed with cleaning and entertaining.  So the bad news is that the backlog is still lingering.  The other bad news is that I've had the misfortune of being on the wrong side of the PTR glitch that locks some folks out of the server.  I might be able to get in with a full or partial reinstall, but haven't had time to fuss with that.  Which means at this point... no PTR news :(

On the crafting front, I started working Tailoring over the holidays, but I'm still on the low end of that.  I've got two toons feeding Frostweave to my Tailor, but it's quite slow going.  Enchanting is slow also, what with the pathetic drop rate on mats.  Still, I managed to reach 390 yesterday just using ingredients from my own looted junk.  At this point I'm tempted to wait until the patch comes out to push higher, so I'll know what the long term leveling process looks like.  Knowing that Blizzard is fussing with it kind of puts a damper on my motivation to slog through under current conditions.  My engineering is sitting at about 430, so it's in the right range for a power-up.  That will likely be the next post I write, given enough time to work on it :)

The good news is that I *did* achieve my main goal for the holiday break, which was getting two of my toons to level 80!  My druid Kaliope and rogue Krystella are now at the level cap and are starting to gear up for raids.  I'm proud to say that my rogue had a Titansteel Shanker waiting in the bank for the big day, made with love by me :)  And my druid had a pair of Earthgiving Legguards set aside as her birthday present for the big 'Eight Oh'.  I'm still collecting mats for other epics, but I'm pretty happy with what I've been able to do so far.

I have to say, I'm really getting into this new BOE crafted epic thing.  My blacksmith can make weapons, my druid makes leather armor, my jewelcrafter makes rings and necklaces, my chanter is hooking them up with enhancements.  Between them all you could almost come up with half a set of pre-raid gear for most toons.  That sure does help when you have multiple toons to gear up for Naxx and don't want to grind all the same dungeons 3/4/5 times.

I also went on my first Heroic with my rogue this past weekend - Gun'Drak.  We didn't manage to get down the last two bosses before respawns hit, but we did clear most of the dungeon.  I was pretty tickled since it was my first time and I know I was dragging the group down a bit.  My DPS still needs some work, it was only around 900 on that run.  Since then I've beefed it up to about 1100, but the other DPS folks were cranking 1300-1500.  Time to make more epics!!

  2. I sure did, thanks Drainar :) I got several new shirts from Thinkgeek and a new 500gb hard drive to store all my Americal Idol video files. I suppose this makes me a true nerd, I'm happy that I got a new item for my computer, lol!

I hope my readers also had a nice holiday! Anyone else get anything exciting for Christmas?

  3. Hey, Kaliope. I have been a long time reader of your blog. You might want to consider a multilate build with your rogue. Your hybrid spec is the 1st I have seen of it on any build suggestion sites or anywhere. Your dps is going to suffer until you change your spec. Thanks for your time, and good luck with your crafting endeavors. Bone

  5. Thanks for the tip Bone - I'm still kinda playing with my talents. I was trying out Subtlety while I leveled and then sorta threw my old combat spec back up after I capped because I missed Blade Flurry and AR. So right now it's a cross between my old 70 combat build and part of the Subtlety build I used to level (wasn't quite ready to give up Prep). Once I'm sure I'll be mostly raiding I'll likely switch to full combat or whichever build ends up having the best DPS for daggers. For now I'm hybrid because I like having the extra escape abilities in the Subtlety tree while I'm questing, but I still want to do reasonable DPS in Heroics.

  6. Combat is ok for trash (relatively speaking) but will fall behind a full Mut build. Of course, if you're only instancing and not farming on your rogue, go HAT. By far the most dps out there and an interesting mechanics change for rogues - at least until they figure out how to nerf it properly.

If your not on PTR, waiting until patch is probably a good idea. You can give your readers the 'accurate' update on leveling and save yourself some dough too! Both tailoring and enchanting will be much cheaper. I leveled tailoring to 440+ within a few weeks on my lock and it hurt so much I left enchanting at 389 where it sits for now. Course, like you I have multiple 80s and 440+ in BS, JC, tailor, cooking, skinning, LW, fishing, first aid lol, mining, and herbing. Those crafting ones cost a lot, and waiting until patch is not a bad thing! :)

Good to see you again Kaliope, had me worried for a bit there.

  7. Hi, wanted to say thanks for the work you do, I've been using the guides and such for right at a year now and it's helped alot. I've brought a few friends to WoW with me and I tell them all to come here. I was pleasantly suprised when I saw you played on Llane. I moved to the server about 6 months ago and really hit my stride. Maybe I'll say hi sometime =) Keep up the great work and good luck
