As the sugar rush fades...

Ok, so I really should have given this another "Winter Veil" title, but there are three up already so I opted for something a bit less repetitive. Last night I checked in with Greatfather Winter to see what he had in store for us under the tree this year.

Immediately I noticed that they updated the gifts under the tree to display the idiot-proof ! overhead. I understand that for obscurely located quests this is helpful, but in this circumstance I found it a bit annoying. Last year it was kind of fun to try and figure out which gifts were "hot", almost like a mini-game of it's own. The gifts are just distracting now, in terms of game immersion. It's like Blizz is saying "I don't think you are capable of spotting that herb unless I make it sparkle like a little girl caked in Barbie makeup". I understand that some folks might be vision-impaired and perhaps they need the extra effects, but it would be nice if we could turn them off.

Anyway, I collected my gifts on all 5 of my high-level toons and 3 bankers. I noticed that all characters can collect the first two gifts: Egg Nog and Winter Veil Cookies. Higher toons can also get the Wand and the Robot Toy, my level 20 mage received both of those. Characters over 50 can get all the various gifts, including the Mechanical Greench and a Random Pet (Snowman, Reindeer or Helper Box). I was pretty tickled about them adding the Greench as a standard reward, in past years I've tried to get one and never succeeded.

The bad news is that they completely standardized the gifts and from my sampling it appears that there's no longer a chance to get a recipe from them. I guess it's a good thing that I recommended doing all the quests, because this year that was the only way to get one. Personally, I think it's unfortunate that they removed the recipes from the tree gifts. Obviously it's nice that everyone was able to get a Winter Veil pet and a Greench, which was not the case in the past. But I don't know that I appreciate the trade-off of losing the recipes in the process.

There is some good news for those of you who didn't get your free recipe in the mail from Greatfather Winter this season. They put all the recipes on the Smokywood Pastures vendor, the one who has the Egg Nog and Gingerbread recipes, now also sells the Winter Boots, Hot Apple Cider and Winter Outfit recipes. So if you missed out previously, make sure you stop by and grab the ones you need before these vendors are gone.

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas!!

  1. Someone Alliance side was saying that tailors could go to Org and buy the Green BOP recipe from the Smokey Pastures vendor there. Don't know if it's true or not.

  2. I saw the Red BoP recipe at the Smokey Pastures vendor in Ironforge. Haven't checked on the Horde side, but I don't need it anyway since both my tailors already have it.

  3. Update: I realized that I did not do the gifts on my 70 warrior. She received the Engineering schematic in the Ticking Present, along with the Greench and the Holly. So it's not impossible to get a recipe from the presents, but likely improbable. FYI: That toon was an engineer and already knew the recipe, so I didn't get a recipe that I was lacking.

  4. I think I had 6 toons that were high enough to possibly get one of the recipes from the gifts. Of those 6, one of my toons managed to get the seasonal alchemy recipe.

  5. Dorgol: I saw a lot of folks saying that it was possible to get the Horde recipe somehow, but no one saying they had actually done so and how it happened. Yesterday I checked all the major cities as well as Everlook and Booty Bay. I never saw the green Horde version on any Smokywood Pastures vendor. If someone else has found it, please let us know. At this point I'm thinking this is an urban myth.

On the other hand, I was able to score a couple of Green Winter outfits (not recipe, actual outfit) on the Neutral auction. The prices weren't much worse than my Alliance ones, so if you really want one... =)

  6. Not all of my characters got Eggnog: Some got Winter Veil Roasts instead.

I was rather disappointed to find out the Robot was not as rare as the RARE (blue) itemization might indicate. After I got the first, I was pretty excited. After the second I was going, "Hmmm...nice coincidence...." and after the third, "Bah."

  7. Doubt if BLizzard made the sparklies and the exclamation-on-quest-items patch to aid the visually impaired. If they did, they'd drop the red text on a black background, which is flat out invisible to anyone with low vision. Myself being one such.

I, too, got a recipe in the Ticking box, another Gloves of the Greatfather recipe. The ones I lacked were the Edge of WInter (Blacksmith) and Elixir of Winter's Might (Alchemist). I think I had four charas this year that qualified for that; most of my guys took a break when they hit 35 and are now under 40. I also have two bankers who got the food, which was a waste since they never go out and get damaged.

I'd love to get the green clothes recipe but am unwilling to aid a profiteer (and probably a gold seller) on the Neutral AH. I'll just have to put up with it. Maybe next year someone on Silver Hand who plays Horde could contact me and we could swap recipes that way.

I wasn't disappointed to find the Clockwork Rocket Robot but I wish it wasn't BoP. My bankers could get more amusement out of that than my play charas, and being who I am, I'll be holding onto it for the rest of the year. Well, there's an impetus to 50 up my Tailor and get him to Shatterath... They are fun in crowd situations. The missile launch is very anime-looking.

In fact, the quibble I'd have about the gifts is the time limit on the Greench. I feel rushed now to get into a dangerous situation that would justify using up one of the charges.

Lastly, I don't see much swapping of recipes going on. I tried on the Trade channel to trade-even one of my various Snowmasters or a Gloves for an Edge or Elixir, and was soundly booed. "That's a terrible deal," one scallawag wrote in criticism, though scarcely in those words. So, I sold the Snowmaster design for 18g, and bought the other two for a total of less than 9g. Life's funny that way. I'm going to save my other surpluses and wait for the summer when the AH isn't so crowded, or wait till a guildie says they would like one.

  8. I am so thankful that Bliz added the sparklies to quest objects and mini-map exclamation points! I've been leveling up a feral druid alt and I've discovered quests I never new existed (with 3 other toons). The sparklies remove the tedium of certain quests. I remember spending forever trying to find all the stupid half-buried bottles on the beach in Hinterlands, constantly moving my camera angle around to find the 3 dark blue pixels amid the dark green pixels. No more!
